Hitting the lighting technique ON THE HEAD (a bit of a pun intended)... That is solely my responsibility.
I do not expect my clients to know the technical side of light or how it behaves. I want the light to produce images that flatter my client.
When I first started photography I was pretty clueless about lighting, so I used one source … The SUN.
Bouncing light off reflectors or aluminum trays. The edge of shade was always a safe choice for sun spill off.
I remember one of my many photo-seminars, an instructor said look in the pupil of the eye in magazines and you will know what light the photographer used. In other words - the catch light shape in the eye was the reflection of the light. Brilliant.
I picked up all the magazines I could and tried to guess light, the source, how many were used, and what direction it came from. So as an enthusiastic self-taught learner I decided to tackle all the lighting techniques or as many as I could.
I bought strobes, on and off-camera flashes, LED lights big and small, ring lights, continuous bulb lights, Kino Flo lights (dang those were a pretty penny), and weird little waterproof wireless lights.
Believe it or not, I actually use almost all these lights today … except for the big bulky KINO’s …bye-bye.
So when I have a client that is coming in for an entire business lifestyle session that could last half the day, I am prepared to give them all sorts of creative looks. I can emphasize bone structure and give a shadow chiseled look to men or I can wrap women in beautiful flat light that fills the wrinkles and gives a smooth buttery feel to their skin. I enjoy using all my lighting set-ups and learning new ones. There really is no “best” light as it’s all about the final outcome you are trying to achieve.
